The opportunities to teach at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Virginia, and the University of Southern California have been invaluable, and I was able to accumulate teaching experiences across a wide variety of courses ranging from Chinese History and East Asian Societies to Government and Politics of East Asia, Introduction to American Politics, International Relations of East Asia, and U.S. Foreign Policy.
Below are a some anonymous comments from past students:
Danny is the best TA I've had during my 3 semesters here and I highly recommend him. He greatly improved my understanding of the course material for me as a supplement to the lectures.
Danny is very good at explaining the concepts clearly and asking the right questions to spur conversation. There was never a lull in the conversation or awkward pauses like in most discussions. He is also effective at getting us to form opinions and think for ourselves. Danny made a late night discussion way easier than I thought it would be because it went by so fast each time.
I would recommend him 15 out of 10 times (is that logical? doesn't matter). He is extremely helpful and caring. He is everything you can ask for in a TA.
Daniel was a great T.A. and went out of his way more than any T.A. I've had in the politics department, and out, to help us understand the material. Worksheets, powerpoints, and facilitating conversation about lecture aided in my success in the course.
Daniel is very approachable and I feel comfortable to ask questions during office hours. Most importantly, discussion is structured in a way where it is easy for me to keep up considering that I am new to politics.
Danny is a terrific TA because he is extremely helpful in writing papers, leading discussions, and preparing his students for the exams. He also does not just give us busy work, but allows each person to work with a group to outline the readings which serve as great study aids. He also makes himself readily available to answer questions. I cannot think of any weaknesses for Danny or improvements as I think this discussion is engaging and very helpful overall.
I would highly recommend Daniel Nagashima as a teaching assistant because he was so amazingly clear, efficient, and helpful.
I would definitely recommend Danny to other students because he is engaging, funny, and really helps his students to understand the material and do well in class.
He was careful to consider any alternate or conflicting viewpoints, and he treated all students the same. He showed this through keeping our discussions fairly open ended in terms of letting students voice their opinions and challenge the opinions of others.
If I had to score this discussion among other TA led discussions, then I would give it a 9/10. TA cares about his students, was knowledgeable about lectures, approachable, grading papers promptly, etc. I didn't skip any discussions, and that means something.
Certainly. He is fun, fair, intelligent and interesting - if you don't like him as a TA, you're probably in the wrong class, not with the wrong TA.
